Key takeaways

  • The most expensive Google keywords cluster in legal, insurance, finance, and high-ticket home and health services.
  • Cost per click is driven by competition and customer lifetime value, not search volume.
  • In expensive niches, organic rankings are often the most cost-effective long-term channel.

What Makes a Keyword Expensive

Google Ads is an auction. Advertisers bid on keywords, and the price of a click depends on how many advertisers compete, how much they're willing to pay, and the quality of their ads and landing pages. The most expensive AdWords keywords (Google Ads was called AdWords until 2018) share one trait: a single customer is worth a lot of money.

A personal injury case, an insurance policy renewed for years, a mortgage or a roof replacement can each be worth thousands of dollars. When a customer is worth that much, businesses can afford to pay a high price for each click and still profit.

Industries With the Most Expensive Google Keywords

  • Legal: personal injury, accident, mesothelioma and criminal defense terms.
  • Insurance: auto, home, life and commercial insurance quotes.
  • Finance: loans, mortgages, refinancing, credit and investing.
  • Home services: roofing, water damage restoration, HVAC replacement and pest control.
  • Health: rehab and treatment centers, cosmetic procedures and specialty care.
  • B2B software and services: tools and services with high contract values.

Exact prices vary by city, season and competition, so treat any published “top 10” list as a snapshot, not a price sheet.

Even SEO Keywords Are Expensive

You don't need to be a law firm to see high costs. In Semrush's US data from September 2026, “white label local seo services” showed an average cost per click of about $21, and “tampa seo company” about $16. Every click from those searches costs the advertiser that much, whether or not the visitor becomes a client.

How to Check the Cost of Keywords

  1. Google Keyword Planner: free inside a Google Ads account. It shows “top of page bid” ranges for each keyword in the location you choose.
  2. SEO tools: Semrush, Ahrefs and similar tools show an estimated cost per click alongside search volume.
  3. Your own campaigns: the real cost comes from your account's data, which depends on your ad quality, landing page and targeting.

Use the estimates to size a market, then confirm with a small test budget before committing.

How to Lower What You Pay

  • Target specific, long-tail searches with clear intent instead of broad head terms.
  • Improve landing pages; better quality can lower what you pay for the same position.
  • Use negative keywords to stop paying for irrelevant searches.
  • Limit ads to the locations and hours when leads convert.

Why Your Cost Can Differ From the Estimate

Published cost-per-click figures are averages. What you actually pay depends on your competitors in that auction, your bid strategy, the time and place of the search, and your ad's quality. Google Ads considers expected click-through rate, ad relevance and landing page experience when it ranks ads, so a highly relevant ad with a strong landing page can hold its position for less than a weaker competitor pays.

When SEO Is the Better Investment

In expensive niches, organic rankings are worth more because every organic click is one you don't pay for. A page that ranks for a $20-per-click keyword and brings 200 visits a month replaces about $4,000 a month in ad spend. Paid search is still useful for speed and testing, but a business that relies on it alone pays the full price for every visit, forever. For a direct comparison, see Google Ads vs SEO.

Common Questions

Questions
Answered.

What is the most expensive keyword on Google?

It changes over time and by location, but the most expensive Google keywords are consistently in legal, insurance and finance, where a single customer can be worth thousands of dollars.

How do I find the cost of keywords?

Use Google Keyword Planner for bid ranges in your location, or an SEO tool like Semrush or Ahrefs for estimated cost per click. Your own Google Ads data gives the most accurate number.

Why are some keywords so expensive?

Because competition is high and each customer is valuable. Advertisers can afford high bids when a single sale or case is worth far more than the click.
