01 — The Opportunity

Why Backlink Audits Matter Now.

THE PAID PROBLEM

Links You Bought and Never Got

I audited my own paid link orders against Semrush and found a fifth of them missing after nine months. Most businesses that buy links have never checked. The audit is the receipt.

THE TOXIC PROBLEM

Spam Clusters You Didn't Ask For

Foreign-IP shortener networks, casino mirrors and scraper sites attach themselves to every domain. Knowing which links are junk — and which are harmless junk — is the difference between a clean profile and a wasted disavow.

THE VALUE PROBLEM

Authority Pointing at Dead Pages

Links to URLs that now 404 pass nothing. Redirected properly, they pass everything. This is the highest-return fix in most audits and almost nobody looks for it.

02 — Who You Work With

Audited by Someone Who Audits His Own.

Connor Cedro, SEO consultant

Hey, I'm Connor. I run backlink audits the way I ran my own: every referring domain checked for indexation, authority and relevance, every paid placement reconciled against the vendor's report, every link to a dead page mapped to its live equivalent. I'm SEMrush-certified with an MBA from SMU Cox, and I built and maintain a free backlink checker that thousands of people use every month — the audit is the professional version, with judgment attached. You get a plain-English report, a prioritized action list, and if you want it, the recovery work done. No contracts.

06 — The Playbook

The Backlink Audit Playbook.

CHECK

Indexation Is the Test

A link on a page Google never indexed passes nothing. Vendor dashboards say “complete”; the index says whether it counts.

CLUSTER

See Networks, Not Links

Fourteen domains on one Moldovan IP are one problem, not fourteen. Clustering by IP and template exposes the networks vendors hide.

REDIRECT

Recover Before You Disavow

Most profiles need fewer disavows and more redirects. Reclaiming authority already earned beats cutting links every time.

07 — In Depth

What a Real Backlink Audit Checks.

Live, indexed, and passing value are three different things

A vendor marks a link complete when it is placed. Google counts it when the page is indexed and the link survives the crawl. Those are different events, often months apart, and sometimes the second never happens. The audit checks each link three ways: is the placement page live, is it in the index, and does the linking domain have any authority or traffic of its own. A link that fails any of the three is not an asset, whatever the invoice said.

Reconciling paid links against the vendor's report

If you have bought links — from a marketplace, a productized vendor, or an agency reselling one — you have a spreadsheet of promises. Matching it against the index is the audit's most valuable hour. In my own reconciliation, seven of thirty-nine placements were absent after up to ten months, and the expensive tiers failed at a higher rate than the cheap ones. Every missing link became a replacement claim under the vendor's written guarantee. Most buyers never file those claims because they never look.

Toxic links, and when to ignore them

Every domain accumulates spam: URL shorteners on a single foreign IP, gambling mirrors, scraper sites that copy your content and link back. Google says it discounts most of this automatically, and it usually does. The disavow tool is for the cases where the profile is dominated by junk you or a previous agency actually built, or where a manual action is on the table. The audit separates harmless noise from genuine risk, so you disavow surgically or not at all — a blanket disavow can cut links that were quietly helping.

Links to pages that no longer exist

Redesigns, migrations and abandoned blog subdomains leave links pointing at 404s. That authority is not lost; it is parked, waiting for a redirect. The audit maps every dead target to its closest live page and writes the rules. On sites with a few years of history, this single step often recovers more value than a year of new link building.

What you get and what it costs

A classified inventory, a reconciliation of any paid links with claims drafted, a prioritized action list, and the redirect and disavow files ready to deploy. Audits are scoped by profile size and typically run as a one-time project; the recovery work can be done by me or handed to your developer with precise instructions.

08 — Common Questions

Questions Before You Book.

What does a backlink audit include?

Every referring domain classified by liveness, indexation, authority and relevance; paid placements reconciled against vendor reports; toxic clusters identified; and a redirect and disavow plan ready to deploy.

How is this different from the free backlink checker?

The free tool shows you the links. The audit judges them — which count, which are missing, which are risky — and produces the actions. Tools list; audits decide.

Should I disavow toxic links?

Usually less than you think. Google discounts most spam automatically. I recommend disavowing only when the profile is dominated by links you built or when a manual action is involved.

Can you get my missing paid links replaced?

I draft the claims with order numbers and dates against the vendor's guarantee. Most reputable vendors replace links that never indexed when the evidence is laid out.

How long does an audit take?

Most profiles are audited within a week. Large e-commerce or agency profiles with thousands of referring domains take longer and are scoped up front.

What does a backlink audit cost?

Scoped by profile size as a one-time project, or included in a retainer. The free initial review tells you whether a full audit is warranted.
