Find Out Why Before You Fix Anything.

Most “penalties” aren't penalties. Manual actions are rare; algorithm updates, technical failures and content decay are common — and each one needs a different fix. Diagnosis first.

01 — The Opportunity

Three Things That Look Like a Penalty.

MANUAL ACTION

Rare, Explicit, Recoverable

A human reviewer flagged your site and Search Console says so in the Manual Actions report. If that report is empty, you don't have one — whatever a cold-call salesman claimed.

ALGORITHM UPDATE

Common, Silent, Diagnosable

Core and spam updates roll out several times a year and reweigh what ranks. A drop that aligns with an update date is a quality signal, and the fix is content and authority, not a reconsideration request.

TECHNICAL FAILURE

The Most Common Cause

A redesign that lost redirects, a noindex tag left on, a robots block, a hosting migration — sites lose half their traffic to mistakes that feel like punishment and are actually plumbing.

02 — Who You Work With

Diagnosis Before Treatment.

Connor Cedro, SEO consultant

Hey, I'm Connor. I've seen Tampa businesses pay for penalty recovery when what they had was a missing redirect map, and I've seen sites chase technical fixes when the real issue was that an update decided their pages were thin. The order of operations is the whole service: confirm the drop is real, date it, match it against update history and Search Console, check the manual-actions report, crawl for technical failure, then diagnose content and links. Only then fix — and fix the actual cause. I'm SEMrush-certified with an MBA from SMU Cox, based in Tampa, and I run this as a project with a written diagnosis before any work is proposed.

03 — What You Get

What Recovery Includes.

DIAGNOSIS

Written, Evidence-Based

Traffic and ranking history, update-calendar match, manual-action check, full crawl, link-profile review. You get a diagnosis you can read, not a proposal.

REMEDIATION

The Fix for the Actual Cause

Redirect maps and index fixes for technical drops; content depth and consolidation for update drops; link cleanup and reconsideration for the rare manual action.

RECOVERY

Tracked Until It's Back

Re-crawl, re-indexing, and ranking recovery measured page by page in Search Console, with honest expectations about how long each kind of recovery takes.

04 — How It Works

How a Recovery Runs.

1

Confirm and Date the Drop

Analytics and Search Console history to establish when it started and which pages fell — the pattern usually names the cause.

2

Diagnose the Cause

Manual-actions report, update calendar, technical crawl, content comparison and link audit, in that order. Written findings.

3

Fix, Validate, Recover

The remediation for the real cause, validated in Search Console, and tracked until traffic returns or the next diagnosis is needed.

06 — The Playbook

The Recovery Playbook.

READ THE REPORT

Manual Actions Are Explicit

Search Console tells you if you have one. An empty report means the drop has another cause — and reconsideration requests for non-existent penalties waste months.

MATCH THE DATE

Updates Leave Fingerprints

A drop that begins on an update date is a quality verdict. Sites recover by becoming genuinely better, usually over the following update cycles.

CHECK THE PLUMBING

Technical Drops Recover Fastest

Lost redirects, stray noindex tags and blocked crawlers cause the largest drops and the quickest recoveries once fixed. Always rule these out first.

07 — In Depth

What Recovery Really Involves.

Manual actions, and the reconsideration process

A manual action is a human decision, listed explicitly in Search Console with the reason: unnatural links, thin content, cloaking, spam. Recovery means fixing the cited problem completely — removing or disavowing the links, rewriting or removing the content — documenting it, and filing a reconsideration request that shows the work. It is slow, it requires honesty, and it works when the problem is genuinely resolved. It is also uncommon; most Tampa businesses that believe they were penalized never had one.

Algorithmic drops are quality verdicts

Core updates reweigh what Google considers helpful, and sites with thin, generic or aggressively optimized content lose visibility when they roll out. There is nothing to appeal. Recovery is real improvement: deeper pages, consolidated duplicates, removed filler, earned authority — and it typically shows over subsequent updates rather than immediately. The diagnosis that distinguishes this from a technical drop is the date pattern and which pages fell.

Technical failures masquerading as penalties

The most common cause of a catastrophic drop is a change nobody meant to make: a redesign that changed URLs without redirects, a development noindex that shipped to production, a robots rule that blocked the site, a migration that broke canonicals. These feel like punishment and are simply broken. A crawl finds them in an hour; a redirect map or a single tag fixes them; recovery shows in weeks as Google re-crawls. Ruling these out first is the discipline that saves months.

Link-related drops and the disavow question

Sites that bought links at scale from a previous vendor sometimes fall under spam updates or manual actions. The remedy is a real link audit — which links are toxic, which are harmless noise — and a surgical disavow only where warranted. Blanket disavows cut links that were helping. I audit link profiles the way I audit my own purchased links: reconciled, verified, judged individually.

Honest expectations

Technical recoveries are fast. Manual-action recoveries take as long as the fix plus Google's review. Algorithmic recoveries take the longest and depend on the site actually becoming better — sometimes the honest finding is that the pages never deserved the traffic they had. I will tell you which case you are in before proposing work, because the wrong fix is worse than no fix.

08 — Common Questions

Questions Before You Book.

How do I know if my site was penalized by Google?

Check Search Console's Manual Actions report. If it lists an action, you have one. If it's empty, the drop has another cause — an algorithm update, a technical failure or content decay — and needs a different fix.

What causes most traffic drops?

Technical failures after redesigns and migrations, followed by algorithm updates that reweighed thin content. True manual actions are rare.

How long does penalty recovery take?

Technical fixes recover in weeks. Manual actions take the remediation time plus Google's review, often one to three months. Algorithmic recovery can take until the next update cycles reward the improvements.

Should I disavow my backlinks?

Only after an audit shows genuinely toxic links you or a vendor built. Most spam is discounted automatically; blanket disavows do damage.

What does penalty recovery cost in Tampa?

The diagnosis is a scoped project with written findings. Remediation is priced by what the diagnosis found — a redirect map is a small job; a content overhaul is a retainer. You decide after reading the diagnosis.

Can you guarantee recovery?

No one honest can. I can guarantee an accurate diagnosis and the correct fix for it. Sites that lost traffic to technical failure almost always recover; sites that lost it to quality updates recover when they genuinely improve.
